This Weekend's Guide
The weekend after Labor Day is when the fall season really begins around Lake Norman, and the venues respond with tribute nights, jazz, and the year's first community festivals. The lineup below is pulled from the BoatYard LKN events calendar, the Cain Center for the Arts, and Cornelius Today's "Live at the Lake" series. Many shows are free, and times and acts are subject to change, so confirm with each venue before heading out.
Summer may be winding down, but the live-music calendar on Lake Norman is just picking up its fall rhythm. This weekend pairs big tribute shows at the area's two anchor venues with the return of a beloved street festival. Here is where to find live music and community events across Cornelius and Lake Norman from Friday, September 11 through Sunday, September 13.
Thursday, September 10: Acoustic 'Til Kickoff
BoatYard LKN, 6 PM: Acoustic 'Til Kickoff
BoatYard Lake Norman at 18418 Statesville Road hosts its free, all-ages Thursday acoustic series as a lead-in to the weekend. Grab a seat on the lakeside deck and let the music set the tone for the days ahead. A relaxed, family-friendly start to the week's lineup.
Friday, September 11
BoatYard LKN, 8 PM: Departure, a Journey Tribute
Departure brings a faithful Journey tribute to the BoatYard's lakeside stage. It is a 21-and-up show around 8 PM, so arrive early for waterfront table seating. This is the area's primary dedicated live-music venue, open Wednesday through Sunday.
Cain Center for the Arts, 7:30 PM: Tuba Skinny
The Cain Center for the Arts on Catawba Avenue presents Tuba Skinny, the New Orleans traditional jazz band, with doors at 6:30 and show at 7:30. A ticketed, seated performance in the intimate 401-seat theater, and a standout booking for jazz fans.
Saturday, September 12
Cain Center for the Arts, 7:30 PM: Good Times Bad Times, a Led Zeppelin Tribute
Saturday evening at the Cain Center brings Good Times Bad Times, a Led Zeppelin tribute, at 7:30 PM in the theater. A chance to hear classic rock played live in a seated venue rather than a bar.
BoatYard LKN, 8 PM: Superunknown with Nookie and 7 Year Witch
The BoatYard closes out Saturday with a heavier bill: Superunknown with special guests Nookie and 7 Year Witch on the lakeside stage at 8 PM. One to circle for fans of modern rock and grunge-tinged sets.
Cornelius Festival of Cultures, Cain Park, 11 AM
The Cornelius Festival of Cultures returns to Cain Park at 21336 Catawba Avenue on Saturday from 11 AM. Free and family-friendly, with food and beer-and-wine vendors, arts and crafts, and live music throughout the afternoon. It is one of the town's signature cultural celebrations and pairs perfectly with an evening show in Old Town.
Sunday, September 13
Sundays around the lake are for slowing down. Rudder & Rose on West Catawba Avenue keeps its regular rotation of live acts, Lost Worlds Brewing on One Norman Boulevard often features acoustic sets on the patio, and Bin 110 and Harp and Crown round out the weekend rotation. The Lake Norman Social District remains active daily until 10 PM, so a slow Sunday afternoon strolling Old Town with live music in the background is an easy way to close the week.
Looking Ahead: Late September and October
If you are leasing or visiting through the month, the calendar keeps filling up. At the BoatYard, expect Mojo Juju on Friday, September 18 and Life in Technicolor, a Coldplay tribute, on Saturday, September 19, while the Cain Center hosts Marty Manous on Thursday, September 17.
'Tawba Walk Arts & Music Festival, Saturday, September 26, 2 to 8 PM at Oak Street Mill (19725 Oak Street). Free, with two live-music stages, a kids' zone, food trucks, and 100-plus vendors along the 'Tawba.
All American Dog Show, Sunday, September 27 at Robbins Park (17738 W Catawba Avenue). Pet vendors, concessions, and dog contests in a family-friendly afternoon.
Laketoberfest, Saturday, October 10, 3 to 8 PM at Bailey Road Park (11536 Bailey Road). Free, with live music, North Carolina beer and wine, food trucks, and a kids' zone.
Amazing Maize Maze, weekends through October 31 at Historic Rural Hill (4431 Neck Road, Huntersville). A 7-acre corn maze, hay rides, and a pumpkin patch, with night mazes arriving in October.
Carolina Renaissance Festival, fall weekends at its Huntersville site, a short drive south of Cornelius.
